Believe it or not, there is a whole internet industry out there that depends on people making typos, or just plain not knowing how to spell. Those who capitalize on this kind of human error are called “typosquatters” (?), and if you’re not careful your competitors will typosquat on you.
In case you’re not familiar with typosquatting, here’s a quick overview: You’ve probably seen it in action before – the “typosquatter” sites are sites whose URL is a misspelling of a common term. Here are a few examples:
- nikey.com (not “Nike”)
- comcst.com (not “Comcast”)
- aple.com (not “Apple”)
Now maybe your brand isn’t quite a household name yet, but if your company name isn’t 100% typo-proof you should consider cornering the market on some common misspellings (by the misspelled domain names)…then set up those misspelled domain names to re-direct any visitors to your real domain name. That way if someone types in “yourbusines.com” (one “s”) instead of “yourbusiness.com” they’ll still find you. That’s worth the $9/year domain registration cost isn’t it?
